Najmul Hossain Shanto is a classic left-handed batsman who started playing cricket at a very young age. A double-ton to his name at the school level grabbed enough eyeballs and immediately led to his consideration for the 2014 Youth World Cup when he was just 15 years old. Soon after that, Najmul struck his maiden domestic century while representing the Rajshahi Division.

A Short brief about Najmul Hossain Shanto
Although he made his debut in 2017 and scored two Test centuries in 2021, it took Najmul Hossain Shanto over five years to truly establish himself in the Bangladesh team. Once he did, however, he was rewarded by being appointed captain in all three formats.
Shanto’s turnaround in form began at the 2022 T20 World Cup. Initially uncertain of his place in the XI, he ended the tournament as Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer. His clarity and shot-making were evident as he turned 2023 into a bumper year, becoming the team’s top run-scorer in every format. He amassed 1650 international runs at an average of 42.30 that year, compared to 1603 runs at 22.90 from 2017 to 2023. Primarily a No. 3 batter, Shanto solidified his place in both the ODI and Test sides in 2023, and became the first Bangladesh batter to score over 500 runs in a BPL season.
In May of that year, Shanto scored his first ODI century in a narrow win over Ireland. A month later, he recorded his first Test hundreds at home—a twin effort in a massive victory over Afghanistan in Mirpur. He followed this up with a controlled, clinical century against a patient New Zealand attack in Bangladesh’s next Test. Heading into the ODI World Cup, he had scored a half-century and a century in successive Asia Cup matches and started the global tournament with two more 50-plus scores. Despite a string of single-digit scores that followed, Shanto broke the rut with a match-winning 90 in the infamous timed-out match against Sri Lanka, where he pointed out to captain Shakib Al Hasan that Bangladesh had the right to appeal against Angelo Mathews for taking too long to face his first ball. In his first major series as the long-term captain against Sri Lanka at home in 2024, Shanto led Bangladesh to a 2-1 ODI series win but lost the T20I and Test series. Ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Bangladesh also lost a series to the USA.
Shanto first came to attention with a double-century in a school one-day match, which led to a place in the Bangladesh Under-17s and then the U-19 World Cups in 2014 and 2016. In the latter, he was Bangladesh’s top run-getter with 259 runs at 64.75. He made his Test debut in Christchurch in 2017 as an injury replacement for Mominul Haque. Between these milestones, Shanto made his first-class debut, scoring four half-centuries and a century in the space of a month during the 2015-16 season.
