FAQS About World Test Championship Jun 2023 – Dec 2025
The World Test Championship (WTC) is an international cricket competition organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the longest format of the game, Test cricket. It aims to bring more context and excitement to Test matches by creating a league system where teams compete over a two-year cycle to qualify for the WTC final.
In the WTC, points are awarded based on the results of Test matches within a series. Each series carries a maximum of 120 points, regardless of the number of matches. Points are distributed equally across the matches in a series, with a win, draw, and tie earning different point values. This system ensures that each Test match holds significance in the overall standings.
The top two teams in the WTC points table at the end of the two-year cycle qualify for the WTC final. The points table ranks teams based on the total points accumulated from their Test matches during the championship period. The final match determines the WTC champion.
The next WTC final is scheduled to be held in June 2025. The location of the final is usually determined by the ICC and announced well in advance. The inaugural WTC final in 2021 was held at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, England.
The WTC adds a competitive edge and context to Test cricket by creating a league format with a clear path to a final. It encourages teams to compete more intensely in each match and series, as every game affects their standing in the championship. This format aims to increase fan engagement and interest in Test cricket, highlighting the importance and excitement of the traditional format.
